- the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.
- a particular system of faith and worship.
- a pursuit or interest followed with great devotion.
In short, religion is nothing but a culmination of faiths and beliefs.
Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and other pietism are not religions. They are faiths and beliefs of their respective founding fathers. They were brought into being and preached by the wise people who are now known revered as Gods. All over the world, the architects of every faith and belief present today only preached the values they believed in; they never imposed their beliefs on their acolytes. Never. Not Jesus Christ. Not Prophet Muhammad. Not Ram. Not Krishna. Not one. They are called ‘divine’ for a reason. Do you ever see anyone calling Hitler divine? No? Because he never preached, he imposed.
‘Religion’ was termed by mortiferous beings like us. Yes, the term was initially coined to bring people of the same faith together but, just like every other thing humans have touched, we have corrupted it. We, mere mortals with a life expectancy of 60-70 years, have corrupted these pious beliefs to satisfy our own selfish motives. After all, where’s the fun in rainbows and unicorns, right?
History is a proof that the influential have, time and again, meddled with people’s faith and beliefs to sedate their twisted hunger. The rise of communal violence is enough proof that the situation hasn’t changed much.
Not one religious book imposes its beliefs.
Not one religious book says it’s superior to the rest.
Not one religious book promotes liquidation.
Not one religious book promotes ostracism.
Then why are we still committing pogroms? Why are we murdering in cold blood for having different religious text? Why are we, the ‘it’ generation, still ventriloquial figures to the stage performances of our leaders?
Simple. It is because the junta has failed to understand that religion is no longer a synonym for one’s faith and beliefs. The corrupted interpretations have left the naïve junta to foolishly believe everything their gurus teach. Our barbarism, our want of violence has enslaved us to the extent that we have started killing our own at the whims and fancies of these leaders.
We live in the advanced world, but right do we have to call ourselves advanced when we relate terrorism to a religion? Why do we call ourselves liberal when we firmly believe that a faith teaches its followers to murder in cold blood?
Since when were we so stupid? Since when are we blind as a bat?
India -the country with the tagline ‘Unity in Diversity’- has had around 65 communal riots since 1947. What then gives us, Indians, the right to call ourselves secular? What right do we have to blame other countries for their religious conflicts when our own citizens of minority faiths live in fear and insecurity?
India has always lived in a culturally and religiously harmonious environment. Why then have we let petty politicians misguide us on faith?
Are we tolerant because we let fellow citizens being killed on meat? Are we incredible because we are still fighting over religion (even after the Great Partition)?
“Religion was preached by the wise and taught by the foolish”
But we’ll never learn, right?
^ Victims of pogroms all over the world.
